The automobile has been the dominant force in personal mobility for the last few decades, numerous efforts to challenge its supremacy have failed to materialise, the main incentive for travelling by car is that it offers cheap, long-range, door-to-door mobility. 

Although, governing bodies are attempting to achieve a more balanced modal split, its practical superiority will ensure it remains a vital part of the transport system of the future.

Autonomous driving plays a key role in making the car of the future sustainable. It is expected to decrease congestion, increase safety and accommodate for people that previously had reduced access to the transport network. It also allows for the implementation of car sharing networks which reduces   the amount of vehicles on the road and need for on-site parking.

Multiple obstacles exist which hinder safe autonomous driving. One of them is a need for accurate positioning. The technology which is used to locate the position, is Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). This technology will be discussed in a coming article.
